The carriage stopped in front of the large three-storey townhouse. It was five oâclock on a Friday and he prayed he would still find Oliver at home. He turned to Ms Poole.
âIâll be right back.â
The butler recognized him and quickly informed him that Mr Potts was home and getting ready to go out for the evening. At his request, the man left him in the drawing-room to go call his master. The man had barely left, when Jeremiah heard hasty footsteps coming down the stairs.
Oliver was dressed in a dark suit and his hair was styled to perfection. He came to hug Jeremiah, surprising him. He pulled away to look at Jeremiah.
âHow did it go?â
âWell, uh, thatâs actually why Iâm here.â He grimaced. âI hate doing this so unexpectedly, but I need a place to stay for two nights.â
Oliver smiled broadly. âYou donât even have to ask. You can have the whole second floor all to yourself.â He pulled at this neatly fastened tie, loosening it.
âWhat are you doing? Your man said you were going out.â
âNot anymore.â
Jeremiah squeezed his friendâs shoulder. âThank you, Oli.â
âNothing to thank me for, Jeremiah,â He threw over his shoulder as he poured them both a drink. âBrandy?â
âYes, but thereâs something else I need to tell you first.â
âWhat is it?â
âI brought the babies with me and theyâre waiting outside in the carriage.â
âWhat? You brought the baâ¦babies? Are you talking about more than one?â He threw his hands up. âAnd you left them in the carriage all by themselves?â He slammed the glasses down on the nearest table. âLetâs go get them.â
Completely taken aback by his friendâs reaction, Jeremiah followed him out of the drawing-room. Ms Poole looked surprised when she saw Oliver.
âOliver, meet Ms Catherine Poole. She was gracious enough to offer to travel with me and the babies.â
Oliver gave the woman a warm smile. âItâs a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Ms Poole. Thank you for coming to my friendâs aid. âMy name isâ¦â
âMr Oliver Potts. Iâve seen some of your work. Itâs an honour to meet you, sir.â
âThatâs very kind of you, Ms Poole.â He turned to Oliver. âI could get one of my servants to stay the night and serve as a chaperone.â
âThatâs not necessary, Oliver. Iâm booking Ms Poole into Mivartâs for the next two nights.â He noticed Ms Pooleâs surprised face. He wasnât sure if it was the fact that he was booking her into the most expensive hotel or that he had taken it upon himself to add one more night to her layover in London. He gave her a small smile and she blushed. âNow, if you donât mind, could we ask one of your female servants to see to the infants while I accompany Ms Poole to the Mivartâs Hotel?â
âNot at all, as long as I can come along.â He directed the question at the young woman and she blushed prettily at the acknowledgement.
âYou are welcome, Mr Potts.
âThank you, Ms Poole.â
